OLD NOVELS

Back in the '70s, several series of SPACE: 1999 novelizations and original novels were produced. The following is a quick guide; more details are available at Martin Willey's Catacombs site.

First came the original novelizations of Year One. Each of these linked the episodes together through a variety of means, to shape each book's set of episodes into a single novel. Some of this linking material will be adapted in the Year One Omnibus scheduled for release by Powys -- which will also include a new novelization of Earthbound, the episode skipped in the original novels, now written by E.C. Tubb.

2. Moon Odyssey

3. The Space Guardians

6. Astral Quest

The Testament of Arkadia

These were followed by a series of original Year One novels. Powys is not currently scheduling any reprints of these books. However, the titles which are highlighted below have been reprinted by other publishers:

1. Alien Seed by E.C. Tubb
2. Android Planet by John Rankine
3. Rogue Planet by E.C. Tubb
4. Phoenix of Megaron by John Rankine
Earthfall by E.C. Tubb

While the first four books were stand-alone novels, Earthfall was in part an expanded and revamped adaptation of the first episode Breakaway, also featuring a new conclusion to the series.

With the revamp of the show in Year Two, the second batch of novelizations were all handled by Michael Butterworth:

TITLE EPISODES

5. The Time Fighters Space Warp

6. The Edge of the Infinite All That Glisters

These novelizations -- plus a new one of The Taybor, which was skipped in the original run -- have been reworked by Butterworth into the Year Two Omnibus, which presents the episodes in chronological order.

The Edge of the Infinite ended on a cliffhanger, with Moonbase Alpha facing an intergalactic journey of unprecedented length. This cliffhanger was resolved in a series of original novels set after Year Two -- published only in Germany in 1978. English translations of the titles follow:

1. The Andromeda Riddle by H.W. Springer
2. The Inheritance Of The Robots by H.W. Springer
3. The Immortals Of The Moon by H.W. Springer
4. Invasion of the Telepaths by H.W. Springer
5. Operation Exodus by Kurt Brand
6. The Steel Planet by M.F. Thomas

More information about these books can be found at Mondstation 1999. To date these novels have never been published in English... but who knows?
